The 12-metre-long Maxlimer is about to make history.Sometime soon it will pull out of this harbor in Canada and begin a 35 day journey to England all without a crew. Ashley Skett is with Sea-kit International, the company that designed the boat. He says the goal behind unmanned vessels like the Maxlimer is to keep humans safe. I don’t think it will ever fully replace all man vessels. There’s still a lot of manned operations happening out there. But the main point here is removing humans from harm’s way and bringing them into a safer environment, and safety is one of the main drivers behind this project.

But beyond safety, Sea-kit’s Ben Simpson says a vessel that doesn’t have to make room for a crew calls for an entirely new way to think about ship design. If you take the people out of the equation, you don’t need a bridge, you don’t need a galley, you don’t need water supplies, you don’t need air conditioning. And suddenly the size of that vessel becomes a fraction of the size of vessels that are currently being used offshore. The ship is a battery gas hybrid, which means it uses significantly less fuel than regular vessels. And when necessary, the radar and communications equipment allow humans to remotely pilot the ship from a land-based control room. What is now available through technology is very, very similar to what you have on the bridge of a ship and in many ways, I would argue, even more comprehensive. If you look at the pictures behind me, the controller here in this station can actually see all the way round on the horizon near real-time and in many ships, it’s quite difficult to actually even see what’s behind you from the bridge event ship. The Maxlimer can launch and recover other autonomous vehicles. An ability needed for its original mission, the Shell Ocean Discovery XPrize, a competition to find the best way to autonomously survey the ocean floor.
